My Family Can Help Me Stop Drinking

My family can help me stop drinking: This is the thought comes from an alcoholic every time he is sober.  But how can family members help an alcoholic if he himself does not want to change his lifestyle—and only think of getting help when he’s not intoxicated?

The family is the basic group of a society, having the same goals and values, and sharing the same dwelling place. As we all know, a family consists of a mother, a father, and a child (or children).  For everything that we do, we tend to consult the views coming from either our parents or our siblings, that is if we have any.  Proper consultation takes place within the house where we bond. Family ties bond each of its members like glue, no matter what the cost.

‘Help me stop drinking’ is a phrase that heralds the desire of an abuser to quit alcohol.  There are ways to battle this behavior and these are through the efforts of the family.

If you are bent on quitting on alcohol, ask family and close friends to support you in achieving your purpose.  They can help in finding a good doctor to help you start on Detox and medication. Knowing a good therapist is also a plus.  Support groups are available where help is needed.  They’re just a phone call away.  Better yet, ask for suggestions for a rehabilitation center.

Slowing down on drinking can also do wonders.  Some suggest that one can go slow on liquor intake by substituting shots for glasses of water, fruit juices, iced tea, soda and coffee. Drinking when hungry could result in consuming more; same thing as when you’re thirsty and wanting to quench the thirst.

Select a good day as a non-drinking day.  Once attained, start by increasing the days and make a log of everything that transpires each day until the time that you would feel comfortable enough.

Postpone the time of your scheduled drinking session.  This is where procrastination makes a grand entrance and takes center stage, thus, making a way for it to be of good value to a person. There is a tendency of consuming smaller amounts of alcohol using this strategy.

Divert attention by getting lots of exercise.  Doing fitness can regulate, if not, decrease consumption.  Drink plenty of water to replenish lost liquid while doing crunches or treadmill, or any other program that you are enrolled in. After every exercise, you’d feel revitalized; anxiety and edginess will not be a part of your system anymore.

Get busy doing lots of work; oblige yourself to an activity that involves thinking and using all your senses, together with using your fingers or feet.  You will end up asking yourself: how will I be able to hold a glass or a bottle of beer when I already have my hands full.

So, what are close friends’ and family ties’ connection with your undoing?  They do help you because you are loved and cared for. There are no hard tasks if people around know how to lend a hand.

The need for self-motivation is enjoined to achieve the main goal. All there is to know is finding the right approach for treatment and rehabilitation process to work, and by having a steady focus.

To all these coping strategies with the bad substance of a liquid we call booze, there is a big chance in making it; just get your family and friends involved.  But bear in mind that in spite of all the help it’s still you who will the one to manipulate the oar.  They will just help you paddle within stormy seas until you reach the dock of sobriety. So, if someone asks you and mouth’s the phrase: “help me stop drinking”, will you help?
